Seattle, Washington

Seattle is a food lover’s paradise. Holding a sweet spot in the city’s culinary heart, the 100-year-old Pike Place Market is a popular destination for locals and tourists. The oldest continually operating public farmers’ market in the country, it pioneered the “meet-the-farmer” connection in 1907. From salmon to strawberries, halibut to haricot vert, Dungeness crab to clams, Pacific oysters to asparagus, and berries to bushels of greens, the bounty of local, seasonal foodstuffs here is breathtaking. The Emerald City is one of few places on earth where folks can name all five species of wild Pacific salmon -- and tell you their favorite. Seattle is homeport for the Alaska fishing fleet that fishes wild salmon, halibut and rockfish from icy North Pacific waters. And, yes, Seattle’s coffee really is that good – a double espresso is the best way to counter Seattle’s dreary, drizzly winter mornings. Baristas are everywhere, housed in everything from drive-up mobile vans to the ubiquitous storefronts of a certain national coffee empire.

About me:
I was born to bake... both of my grandmothers loved to bake, and I grew up at the kitchen counter, where I learned to make such treats as waffles, cookies, pies and traditional Norwegian dishes on my own from the time I was old enough (or tall enough, rather) to reach the kitchen counter with a stool. Now, baking is my sanity. I can't go very long without heading back into my kitchen, and I love to surprise others with special treats. Homemade with love!

Easy Texas Chili

Reviewed on Oct. 5, 2008 by Ellyn Oaksmith
This was, as billed: easy, delicious and classic. I omitted the chopped chili for the younger members of the family and left it simmering on low for the afternoon and it was delicious. Perfect for a rainy Seattle fall day. Not that it rains here...

Olive Pecan Spread

Reviewed on Oct. 4, 2008 by SunnyByrd
Excellent! I was a little worried about the mayo, but I think it went really well in this. I used green olives with pimento because that's what I had - don't know if it was right or wrong, but it turned out great. I added a little flatleaf because I'm always adding it to stuff. This is also a great recipe to play with if you wanted to add different herbs or spices to it. Thanks LOWA!

Apple Goat Cheese Bruschetta

Reviewed on Oct. 6, 2008 by SunnyByrd
Awesome. Great combination of flavors - one I have never thought of. I over-toasted my bread a little, but it didn't end up mattering once I got the yummy topping on it. Thanks so much for the recipe, CrdsGrl! Congrats on getting your recipe published, it's a good one! :)
